The Associate Dean for Research serves as a member of the leadership team of the School and provides leadership for the strategic planning and development of research and scholarly activities. The Associate Dean for Research leads in maintaining effective school-wide systems of support for the research and scholarly work of faculty. A major role of the Associate Dean for Research includes collaborating with the Department Chairs to facilitate the development of rigorous and innovative programs of faculty research. The Associate Dean for Research serves as the formal point of contact for matters related to research and scholarly activities for the School with the University, the VCU Health System and external organizations. Rank will commensurate with experience and background. This is a tenure-eligible position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required



  • Research-focused Doctoral degree, with a focus in health sciences.

  • Meet criteria for appointment at rank of tenure-eligible Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Well-developed research portfolio with recent evidence of external funding with interprofessional teams.



  • Consistent history of externally funded research and publications in top tiered journals.

  • Record of effective teaching capability.

  • Record of effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability in a community of scholars.

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment.


Preferred

  • Experience in translational and clinical science

  • Expertise in organizational systems development and management

  • If applicant is a nurse, is currently licensed or eligible for licensure to practice nursing in Virginia.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads strategic planning for achievement of the research mission of the School consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the University.

  • Develops and fosters continuous improvement of school-wide systems, fiscal, physical and human, that support faculty members in development of programs of research including grant applications and grant management.

  • Collaborates with department chairs to support individual faculty members in development and implementation of programs of research.

  • Implements faculty development programs related to the research foci of the School and programs that support faculty at various stages of their research careers.

  • Manages development and submission of voluntary and mandatory reports on the research projects and activities of the School and its faculty for all internal and external reporting bodies.

  • Serves as the liaison for research related matters between the School and the University's Office of Research and the VCU Health System.

  • Identifies opportunities for participation of SON faculty in activities related to research at local, state, regional and national arenas.

  • Manages the Office of Research, including development and supervision of personnel.

  • Serves as a facilitator in development of collaborative systems of support for clinician and faculty scientists to develop and implement programs of research within the Health System.

  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs to insure the doctoral program prepares graduates for successful careers in research and as stewards of the discipline and future generation of nurses/nurse scholars.

  • Maintains a teaching assignment and program of research.
