Job Description

Department: 43711 Obstetrical Acute

The Registered Nurse effectively maintains the Standards of Practice and Care. Utilizing the nursing process, provides nursing care based on recognized professional and legal standards of practice and promotes collaboration with physicians and other disciplines.


Major Duties:



  • Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals.

  • Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives.

  • Assesses/reassess patient’s condition based upon observation of patient and interview of patient and/or family, physician’s diagnosis and data, diagnostic results, and relevant data from other healthcare providers.

  • Documents all aspects of patient care and maintains patient records, in a timely manner.

  • Provides patients and family members with relevant health care education and instructions regarding treatments and procedures including pre/post hospital care as appropriate.

  • Delegates responsibility to appropriate personnel, as well as, accepts delegated responsibility for function such as, but not limited to, charge nurse for unit activities on assigned shift.

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new and tenured personnel, reassigned nurses, student nurses, patient care assistants, and faculty; serves as a preceptor when requested and submits appropriate documentation in a timely manner.

  • Responds to internal/external disaster as directed.

  • Consistently provides for the continuum of care through communication with all disciplines.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Current knowledge of the nursing role and scope of practice as defined by the State of Ca Nurse Practice Act and the CA Board of Nursing.

  • Current knowledge of American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.

  • Knowledge of current trends and demonstration of standards of care in assigned unit.

  • Successful completion of mandatory requirements including unit proficiencies/competencies.

  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

  • Proficient in P.C. software applications including, Microsoft Word, Outlook, order entry etc.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate work.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience

  • A master’s degree in nursing OR

  • the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.



Desirable Qualifications




  • A broad background in nursing to include upper division and graduate level courses in Nursing Theory in the areas of fundamentals, medical/surgical, and/or maternity, pediatric and psychiatric nursing.

  • Experience in teaching medical/surgical, maternal/child, psychiatric nursing to Vocational Nursing students in a variety of health care settings.

  • Familiarity with the goals of community colleges and their students.

  • Experience in utilizing computers and other multi-media for instruction.

Description of Position

Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, California is seeking a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Nursing to begin in August 2014. The primary teaching assignment will be in the Registered Nursing program in the areas of Fundamentals of Nursing; Maternity and Medical-Surgical Nursing. A secondary teaching assignment may be in the Vocational Nursing Program and/or other Health Science courses. This position has the potential for growth into the role of assistant director or director of the nursing programs. The teaching assignment will be for two semesters totaling 35 weeks a year. In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience

The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):

1. A master’s degree in nursing OR


•A bachelor’s degree in nursing AND master’s degree in health education or health science, OR


•the equivalent OR


•the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.

2. A minimum of 3 years experience as a registered nurse with one (1) year of continuous, full time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse within the previous five years.

3. One (1) year of experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities.

4. Two (2) years of experience teaching in a pre- or post-licensure registered nursing program.

5. Demonstrate “Clinical competence” as defined by the Board of Registered Nursing in


Section 1420© as follows: “Nursing program faculty member possesses and exercises


the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by


staff level registered nurse on the clinical unit to which the instructor is assigned.”

6. A current, clear and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in California

1. Experience managing or directing a nursing unit or pre-licensure nursing program.

2. Experience writing and managing grants; and completing regular grant reports.

Selection Process

Master's degree in nursing

Possess minimum qualifications established by the California Board of Registered Nursing of at least one year's full-time experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care, AND completion of at least one year's experience teaching courses related to nursing, or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.


Possess or be eligible for and obtain a current California Registered Nursing license.


Provide documented evidence of direct patient care experience/clinical instruction in nursing within the last three years.


Possess current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support Certification.

Two years teaching prelicensure RN students.


Familiarity with the community college setting.

SALARY

The initial salary placement range is $55,380 - $83,844 depending on applicable education and experience. Initial salary placement will be determined by the District Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.


Teach assigned lecture and clinical courses in the registered nursing program in a manner consistent with the department's standards, and with the content cited in the approved course outline and plan of instruction; teach in other areas of nursing and health sciences as assigned.


Possess and maintain education and skills necessary for competency to teach in one nursing specialty area and commitment to meet BRN standards for content expert in second specialty area.


Maintain current California Registered Nursing licensure and Health Care Provider Basic Life Support certification.


Perform professional tasks related to the areas of assignment, particularly in student advisement, curriculum design and evaluation, program review and other affairs of the department and division.


Remain current in the subject matter areas and in the techniques of effective instruction through recent clinical experience, professional development, and application of technology to education.


Participate in curriculum development and serve on division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.


Work cooperatively with staff and students.


Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.


Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.


Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.


Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.


Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the disabilities and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of students.


Must be able to teach at any clinical site and any shift.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in nursing


All degrees and course work used to satisfy the required minimum qualifications must be from accredited postsecondary institutions (see www.nocccd.edu/Employment regarding accredited postsecondary institutions).


AND ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:


Possess minimum qualifications established by the California Board of Registered Nursing of at least one year's full-time experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care, AND completion of at least one year's experience teaching courses related to nursing, or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.


Possess or be eligible for and obtain a current California Registered Nursing license.


Provide documented evidence of direct patient care experience/clinical instruction in nursing within the last three years.


Possess current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support Certification.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years teaching prelicensure RN students.


Familiarity with the community college setting.


Demonstrated leadership abilities and/or participation in community or professional organizations.


Demonstrated collegiality and strong commitment to quality teaching, motivation of students, student success, and academic and professional excellence.


Demonstrated knowledge and skill in current instructional technology and ability to integrate the learning process.


Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing, stressful environment while maintaining a professional demeanor.


Meet BRN criteria for faculty content expert in teaching medical surgical nursing and one of the following: obstetric, pediatric, psychiatric, or geriatric nursing. Applicants willing to cross-train to one of the above specialties will also be considered.


Experience with and commitment to working with culturally and ethnically diverse groups.


Effective oral and written communication skills.


SALARY

The initial salary placement range is $55,380 - $83,844 depending on applicable education and experience. Initial salary placement will be determined by the District Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.


BENEFITS

The District is a participating agency in the CalPERS Hospital and Medical Care plan which allows eligible employees to select from several plans for their hospital and medical care. The District pays the full cost of the employee-only health insurance premium for the plan selected by the employee. In addition, the District provides a discretionary fringe benefit allowance that may be allocated toward the premium cost of eligible dependent health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, accident insurance, income protection insurance, and available investment options.

SELECTION PROCESS
