GENERAL DESCRIPTION


Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual with demonstrated nursing instructional and clinical skills to join an outstanding team of vocational nursing faculty, staff and instructional administrators to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. This is a full-time regular contract vocational nursing medical surgical faculty position in the Health Sciences Department, beginning Fall 2014. Appointment is contingent upon funding and Board approval.



PROGRAM AND DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION


The Vocational Nursing (VN) Program at Santa Rosa Junior College prepares students for entry into practice as a licensed vocational nurse. The program has a long history of producing highly qualified vocational nurses with comprehensive nursing skills. Our graduates have excellent outcomes on their NCLEXPN exams and most find jobs readily after graduation in the clinical community. This is due in part to the excellent state of the art VN curriculum and multiple hospital, pre-hospital, community and ambulatory clinical agencies used to complete program objectives. With this position there will be a total of 2 full time faculty. There are numerous adjunct faculty in the program with excellent teaching, clinical experience and skills. Many clinical faculty are nationally certified in their areas of practice.


Our faculty works as a team to provide high quality instruction and consistency in program instruction for our students. Comprehensive online syllabi and handbooks provide guidance for faculty and students. Our facilities in the Race Health Science Building include classrooms with state of the art computer and online and presentation equipment, a computer laboratory, a Learning Resource Center, a skills laboratory and a simulation laboratory with human simulation models. The VN program has gone "green" and has all classes, syllabi, handbooks and testing online and available to students and staff online. This is essential both for preparation for the online NCLEXPN and for clinical practice and electronic medical records. Clinical experiences take place in a wide variety of numerous hospital, skilled nursing, ambulatory and home care settings throughout the county which provide a variety of employment for our VN graduates. These include: acute care medical surgical and maternity care, skilled nursing long term care for nursing fundamentals and team leading, community settings for mental health and substance recovery, doctor's offices, schools, ambulatory care for pediatrics and adults, home care, hospice and developmental care settings. The program at SRJC is well established and respected in the community and in Northern California. The program attracts excellent students and has outstanding graduates with an excellent pass rate in the NCLEXPN and an excellent employment history. The faculty are knowledgeable in theory and excellent clinicians with a dedication to nursing and a passion for teaching. The Vocational Nursing Program is valued by the college and the community as a resource for educating exceptional and competent vocational nurses.



POSITION DESCRIPTION


The assignment for this position will be a full time theory, clinical and lab instructor and serve as director/assistant director for the Vocational Nursing Program. This is a full time tenure track position with required teaching load in: theory, skills/sim lab and clinical teaching areas. The primary focus of this assignment will be Medical Surgical Nursing, psychiatric nursing experience and or pediatric nursing would be a preferred secondary focus. Assignments will include classroom theory, skills lab instruction, skills simulation model instruction, and clinical instruction in a variety of areas in all three semesters of the vocational nursing program. Theory and clinical assignments will include: fundamentals, medical surgical nursing, acute and long term care, gerontology, leadership, team leading, rehabilitation, and pediatrics. Clinical will be in a variety of acute care, long term care and ambulatory/community care settings. Classroom assignments are during the week during regular business hours. Clinical assignments may include day, evening or weekend shifts. There is now a possibility of 12 hour clinical shifts being required in some of our agencies. Assignments during clinical preceptorship at the end of the program include program include day, evening, night, weekend and on-call responsibilities. Duties for director/assistant director include: program, district, clinical agency and BVNPT mandates and responsibilities.


Demonstration of knowledge of the BVNPT Nurse Practice Act in relation to working with VN students in an academic and clinical setting is required. The Director/Asst., Director duties include but are not limited to: preparation of program and instructional materials, tests, syllabi and student handbooks (found online); screening and selection criteria for new students; participation in the planning, implementation and evaluation of an integrated nursing curriculum, implementation of student learning objectives and learning assessment projects, preparation of BVNPT annual report and accreditation, compliance with BVNPT rules and regulations and accreditation mandates, compliance with district duties, PRPP: program review, program budget, faculty workload, compliance with AFA contract regulations and compliance with clinical agency policies and procedures in relation to students in the clinical area. Faculty duties include but are not limited to: ability to teach theory in a variety of medical/surgical, gerontology, leadership/team leading, or pediatric topics. Also required is the ability to teach hands on nursing in the clinical area in a variety of clinical settings: acute medical/surgical, long term care, team leading, ambulatory care etc. Must possess current knowledge in trends and issues in nursing education and ability to work collaboratively in teaching teams to accomplish program goals with students. Our VN program is very diverse, applicant must have ability to work with diverse student populations. Applicant to demonstrate innovation and creativity in creating learning experiences for students; involvement with professional or community organizations that related to health care; ability to counsel, mentor and facilitate students during their learning experiences in the nursing program; ability to use a variety of teaching strategies and online/computer modalities in the classroom and clinical in support of student learning outcomes. The instructor will assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula (including courses that serve community needs, such as short, non-credit, or online courses); assisting in the implementation and assessment of student learning outcomes and learning assessments; and fully participate in department activities and other college service such as committee work; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College. The instructor will assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula (including courses that serve community needs, such as short, non-credit, or online courses); assisting in the implementation and assessment of student learning outcomes; fully participating in department activities and other college service such as committee work; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE



  • Starting Salary Range: $57,389 - $80,918 per year (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule that is competitive with other California Community Colleges.

  • Benefits: The District offers a competitive health and benefit package for employees and eligible dependents.

  • Leave/Holiday time: Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month worked.
