Program Director– Nursing and Health Care

Occupational Summary: This position has a dual reporting structure reporting to the Vice President of Adult and Graduate Studies for the operational aspects of the position and to the Dean of the School of Nursing for the curricular, academic and accreditation aspects of the position. The Program Director is housed in the Division of Adult and Graduate Studies, but is a member of the nursing faculty and is expected to attend nursing department meetings, collaborate on curriculum, assessment and other academic issues, and teach courses as needed. The Program Director provides oversight to the Associate, Bachelor and Graduate programs that fall within the cluster related to Nursing and Health Care. This is a 12 month position that requires teaching a half time load (12 hours) and providing administrative oversight to the Adult and Graduate programs within the cluster.

Essential Job Functions

40% Teaching-12 credit hours of teaching spread throughout the 12 month period. Teaching may be in the MSN and BSN completion programs.


30% Faculty Recruitment, training and evaluation-The Program Director will facilitate (in conjunction with the Dean of the SON):



  • Recruiting quality faculty to teach the adult program within the cluster on the Bethel Campus, any satellite campuses and online.

  • Providing training or training opportunities for Nursing and Health Care faculty in the area of andragogy, and online teaching techniques.

  • Developing course schedule and faculty assignments for courses within the cluster.

  • Evaluating faculty through student evaluations and observation.


10% Assessment-The Program Director will facilitate the academic assessment of all programs within the cluster. This includes collecting the data as defined in the SPE (systematic program evaluation), assessing the data and recommending changes based on the results of the data.

20% Additional Administrative Duties-The Program Director will serve as a member of the AGS APCC which is responsible for approving curriculum and policies within the Division of Adult and Graduate Studies. The Program Director will also give input into the marketing of the AGS programs. The Program Director also serves as an important member of the AGS team.

Performance Expectations



  • Direct the adult and graduate nursing programs;

  • Participate as a member of the nursing administrative committee;

  • Serve as a liaison between AGS and the School of Nursing;

  • Assist faculty with student issues;

  • Provide supervision to faculty in the classroom and online;

  • Handle program logistics;

  • Assist the VAGS and the Dean of the SON in developing catalog and promotional materials;

  • To learn and adopt improved methods of teaching;

  • To demonstrate interest in student learning;

  • To maintain professional effectiveness, including:


o Pursuing professional development by earning 15 contact hours of credit per year in area of educational responsibility

o Remaining current professionally

o Cooperating in all aspects of the academic program

  • To work collaboratively with administrators, faculty and staff;

  • To assist with recruiting and retaining students;

  • To explore new program opportunities;

  • To meet deadlines;

  • To communicate effectively;

  • To facilitate growth through planning and effective implementation;

  • To serve as a Christian role model for students;

  • To maintain a growing relationship with Jesus Christ through personal devotion and corporate worship;

Minimum Qualifications

Education-Earned doctorate from regionally accredited institution with a master's degree in nursing or a master's degree with a major in nursing.

Experience-A minimum of two years teaching at the postsecondary and graduate level. Additional skills include:



  • Experience teaching in a nontraditional setting involving accelerated coursework;

  • Proficiency in computer programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office;

  • Experience working with diverse populations.


Interpersonal and Other Skills

  • A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and can be of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. A capability, by temperament, preparation, and will is necessary to support students as they confront the intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of their lives.

  • A sensitivity to and support of the ethos and traditions of Bethel's campus community is also necessary.


Working Conditions

  • Work generally takes place indoors within temperature controlled office and classroom environments.

  • Travel between the Bethel College Campus and other sites may be required.


Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position include:

  • 50% of the time standing and moving about the department;

  • Carrying, pushing or pulling up to 40 pounds;

  • Stooping and kneeling;

  • Typing, entering data, and communicating with students and colleagues by email;

  • Clear vision;

  • Physically able to use hands, arms and face to communicate non-verbally.
