General Statement:

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide theory instruction in the classroom setting and/or provide clinical instruction in the acute, long-term, and community care settings
2. Implement skill building in the nursing lab setting and in simulation
3. Assume responsibility as a course manager for one or more theory courses
4. Develop scenario-based instruction
5. Report to the director as needed
6. Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development to include student learning outcomes and assessment processes
7. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance the offerings of the nursing department
8. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours
9. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula
10. Participate as an active member of nursing team, department, division, and college committees
11. Teach courses during the evening and on weekends as needed
12. Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs
Requirements:
1. Master's in Nursing OR Bachelor's degree in Nursing AND Master's degree in Health Education or Health Science OR the equivalent (see below)
2. A current California Registered Nursing license
3. At least one year's continuous experience, within the previous two years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care (Clinical teaching applies toward direct patient care)
4. Experience teaching similar subject matter content within the preceding two years
5. Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, as well as sexual orientation and abilities of community college students, faculty, and staff.

In addition to a short classroom lecture demonstration that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:
4. Commitment to staying abreast of new trends in nursing and the clinical setting
5. The ability to reflect on and evaluate one's pedagogy and to examine its effect critically
6. The ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles in both developmental and transfer courses
7. The ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis and evaluation of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting
8. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become self-regulated learners
9. Ability to collaborate on the implementation of high-fidelity simulation scenarios
10. Familiarity with gerontological nursing
11. The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter
12. The commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate to instruction, such as that related to nursing and information and communication technology
13. The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds
14. The ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring and assessment of student progress in the clinical setting
15. The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
16. Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in nursing education
17. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college
