GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: Nursing Course Mentors: Capstone


The Course Mentor serves as the subject matter expertise in the Course(s) of Study assigned and provides academic help to students enrolled in those respective Courses of Study (COS). The Course Mentor reports to their assigned Program Manager of the College.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Actively engages students in learning content and responds to student issues in their area of expertise.

  • Provide academic help to students as requested by using both synchronous and asynchronous technology to communicate with students. This will include, at a minimum, audio chat, instant messaging, threaded discussions, group discussions, and message boards, Community helps, and recorded webinar Getting Started Overviews. Maintains up to date course overviews for Student Mentors and/or students.

  • Be available to students during posted office hours as determined by the department. This will generally include some evening and weekend hours;

  • Mentor students in effective study practices relevant to the discipline(s) covered in the COS and assist students in the use of the related Learning Resources;

  • Mentor students in the topics needed to successfully complete the assessments in the COS(s) and provide feedback on assignments as appropriate;

  • Work with students assigned to their COS(s) to achieve high success rates as measured by pass rates on assessments and successful completion of the Course of Study;

  • Proactively lead sessions to improve student understanding of the key topics and objectives in the COS(s) assigned.

  • Works with various departments and more specifically with a team of Student Mentors, Program Managers, and Program Development for program success and student success.

  • Meets with student mentors weekly in a small team and one-on-one to plan proactive work with students.

  • Participates in CM team meetings, Academic and CM inservice, and one on one meeting with Program Manager as scheduled.

  • Works with others as a team to develop best strategies that result in student success with competency development and assessments, and implement these strategies with integrity.

  • Facilitate student written and oral capstones or practicum experiences along with other program responsibilities and duties.

  • Works in a primarily phone based approach supported by online meeting rooms and computer-based service, with about 10 non-standard hours of contact per week.

  • Other duties as assigned by Mentoring Leadership/PM.


Required Skills

Qualifications: Active unencumbered RN license,



  • Terminal Degree in Nursing (EdD, PhD, DNP) Masters Degree in Nursing (preferred) or Related Health Care field

  • Current National certification in Clinical/practice area preferred (required for Pre-licensure Clinical Course Mentors)

  • One year minimum On-line teaching experience or student experience with 1 year Nursing Education experience.

  • Functional competence in use of on-line teaching and communication technology i.e. Microsoft Office tools, Web-conferencing, Student on-line chats and messaging.

  • Teaching or Clinical/Healthcare experience in field related to Course assigned within last 5 years.
