10-Month Contract Position


The salary range is $4,045 – $5,678 per month. Initial placement on the salary schedule will be on Class 1 and will be related, in general, to the prevailing community salary rates for the occupational field in which the vocational instructor is required to have had experience. The prevailing community rate will be determined by Human Resources through a survey of actual salaries paid in the San Diego metropolitan area. The vocational instructor will then be placed on the step of Class 1 which will provide a monthly salary rate reasonably comparable to the prevailing monthly community salary rate. Initial salary class placement and subsequent salary class advancement shall be predicated on the academic preparation of the vocational instructor at the time of first contract employment with the District.


Vocational instructors with earned master’s degrees at the time of initial contract employment may elect to be rated under either these rules or the rules for arts and science instructors.


Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Overload assignments are paid based on contract parody using the Continuing Education salary schedule B-1 (Classroom) and/or C-1 (Non-Classroom). Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011).

The Position


The San Diego Community College District is accepting applications for an Associate Professor, Allied Health Care / Certified Nurse Assistant, 100%, 10-month assignment.


Applicants should understand that they may be assigned to any Continuing Education campus.


Assignment may include day, evening, weekend hours, and/or off-campus responsibilities. Selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department’s needs. (This may be a split assignment between several campuses.)


In addition, applications accepted for this position may be considered for identical vacancies that occur throughout Continuing Education during the current academic year. Continuing Education campuses offer adults the opportunity to renew their learning experiences through noncredit vocational, basic skills, life skills and enrichment classes throughout the city of San Diego.


Major Responsibilities


Under the direction of a Dean, the Associate Professor teaches courses as assigned in accordance with the catalog descriptions and course outlines. The assignment includes: assisting in designing, providing, and supporting faculty and staff development activities; developing curriculum; participating in curriculum and program review; participating in activities to improve articulation between programs within the District; researching, recommending, and coordinating purchase of instructional equipment and materials; taking initiative in developing new methods of promoting instructional excellence and academic achievement including student-centered learning activities; planning and presenting theory in the classroom; providing clinical supervision in long-term care, home care, rehabilitative and acute care settings; teaching and evaluating students in all phases of the CNA and other health care related courses; preparing students for students for the California Certified Nurse Assistant Exam, coordinating with the California Department of Publich Health; maintaining student records and files; establishing effective working relationships with students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; assisting in planning and organizing program activities; assisting in identifying clinical sites;ability to work collaboratively and build strong relationships with health industry partners; recruiting advisory members; demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills; serving on shared governance committees (e.g. hiring, matriculation, Academic Senate); participating as a peer evaluator; participating in professional development activities on a regular basis and eligibility to serve as Chair of the Allied Health Program.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years nursing experience; OR,

  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution AND six (6) years nursing experience; OR,

  • Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in Nursing; AND,

  • A current and valid California RN or LVN license; AND,

  • Two years of full time experience as a Registered or Licensed Vocational Nurse, at least one year of which must be in the provision of direct patient care in a long-term care or skilled nursing facility; AND, Either twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education courses approved by the Board of Registered Nursing in planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs in nursing; OR, completion of a course in planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs in nursing from an accredited educational institution; OR,

  • Evidence from the California Department of Health Services of prior approval as a Director of Staff Development/Instructor; AND,

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of adult students.


Please note: Final appointment of this position will be dependent upon approval as a Director of Staff Development or Instructor from the California Department of Public Health.

Desired Qualifications:



  • Master’s degree in health related field.

  • Acute care nursing experience.

  • Rehabilitative nursing experience.

  • Public Health Certificate.

  • Home care nursing- one year experience.


The successful candidate shall have achieved:

  • Understanding and application of the roles and responsibility of a Certified Nurse Assistant instructor.

  • Knowledge and/or experience using technology in day-to-day teaching activities

  • The ability to make effective classroom presentations by demonstrating a working knowledge of adult learning theory, techniques of teaching, subject matter mastery, problem-solving skills and communication strategies.

  • Current knowledge of nursing theory, nursing practice and education including understanding the roles of certified nursing assistants, licensed vocational nurses, and registered nurses in skilled nursing, acute care and rehabilitative settings

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in participatory governance structures, curriculum development or other special projects

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, administrators and staff.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

  • Demonstrated rapport with the health care provider community and employers.


Foreign Degree:

Applicants with foreign degrees from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). A copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the application packet.


Licenses/Certificates/Credentials:

Conditions of Employment:
