Director of Evidence-based Nursing Practice


The College of Nursing and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital within the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah seek a tenure-track nurse investigator to direct the clinical nursing research program. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop and direct a transdisciplinary research program, consult with nursing staff to develop their clinical issues and observations into research projects and work with pre and post doctoral students with in the College of Nursing.


The Huntsman Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated cancer center, provides substantial opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations in a highly collegial environment. Available resources include: a Cancer Wellness Center, statewide SEER cancer registry, electronic health records and access to patients from the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Clinics, and links to statewide cancer and other health record data sources. Additional resources include the following cores: Study Design and Biostatistics Center, Microarray and Genomic Analysis, Utah Population Database (a genealogic data base), state-wide Education and Research Outreach to Native American, Latino and other underserved populations, Tissue Resource and Applications Core, Community Engagement, and Research Informatics.


The College of Nursing has a long and distinguished history of excellence in nursing and gerontology education, research and practice and a strong group of faculty with programs of research in cancer. The College awards baccalaureate degrees to traditional and second-degree students as well as registered nurses. Graduate education offered by the College of Nursing includes the Master of Science degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and PhD. The PhD program attracts a cadre of nurses interested in cancer research. We also offer certificates and a Master of Science degree in Gerontology. The Emma Eccles Jones Nursing Research Center occupies the entire top floor of our newly renovated building.


Scope of Position


The Director of Evidence-based Nursing Practice has direct responsibility and accountability for the conduct of nursing research throughout the community of nursing at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. Responsibilities include evaluating and directing the development and implementation of Evidence Based Practice leading to improvement of quality outcomes throughout the cancer program. This individual is expected to establish an independent, extramurally- funded research program and work across disciplines to collaborate with other Cancer Center investigators within and outside of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program. The Director collaborates with other nurse scientists, graduate research assistants and any graduate nursing students conducting research within the Huntsman Cancer Hospital.


Essential Functions


1. Expected to establish an independent, extramurally-funded research program and work across disciplines to collaborate with other Cancer Center investigators within and outside of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program.


2. Promotes, supports, and facilitates individuals engaging in research activities to advance research in practice: evidence-based practice, the conduct of research, research utilization, and dissemination of research results.


3. In collaboration with HCH Nursing Leadership, CoN leadership, and HCI leadership, develops research and EBP goals for nursing throughout HCI and conducts an annual clinical research needs assessment and uses results to construct a strategic plan to develop clinical research for nursing.


4. Collaborates and develops innovative programs to educate, mentor, and enhance the knowledge and practice of nursing staff. There will also be opportunities to promote educational advancement for nurses interested and showing promise as cancer nurse scientists.


5. Mentors nursing personnel and departments to apply for funding to support research projects.


6. Fosters the development of an environment conducive to the conduct of inquiry; research and practice.


7. Conduct collaborative research with other CCPS members and members of the other four research programs.


8. Serves as liaison between HCH Nursing, HCI department of Cancer Control and Population Science Program, and University of Utah College of Nursing, and other academic programs on nursing and other HCH research-related activities including linking student/postdoctoral projects of all levels of instruction to hospital research needs/ activities.


Position Qualifications


RN with Ph.D. in Nursing or related field. Experience as a clinical nurse in a leadership role. Independent researcher qualified for Associate Professor or higher rank with experience facilitating research activities.
