Psychiatric Nursing (RN) Instructor

East Los Angeles College announces an opening for a Limited Nursing (RN) instructor to begin instruction in the fall 2013 semester (August 26). Interested individuals who possess the required educational and recent nursing experience are invited to submit applications online. A strong background in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing practice with evidence verifying teaching or caring for Geriatric clients is required to be able to teach. The assignment will include teaching at off-campus facilities; days, evenings, nights, and weekend classes; and/or short-term classes on a non-traditional schedule. A limited instructor must be flexible to meet the changing requirements of the department, where the schedule of classes is aligned to meet student needs.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's in nursing AND Master's in health education or health science. Also, a valid and active RN license and at least one year's experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the past five years. Also completion of at least one year's experience teaching courses related to nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary assignment is to teach a full time assignment load of nursing theory and or clinical courses, in accordance to the AFT contract. The duties and responsibilities associated with the position will occur both within the department as well as in the larger college setting.


PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Faculty members at East Los Angeles College are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. Instructors and staff shall work as a team to create innovative educational experiences, and provide an environment where students are partners in learning. Instructors will also assist in program planning, peer evaluation, educational project development and participate in personal and professional growth and development activities according to AFT and BRN guidelines and requirements.


DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Clinical nursing practice in Psychiatric Mental Health care setting within the last three years, or at least one year experience teaching in a Registered Nurse program or completion of a course which included practice in teaching nursing theory and practice.

  • Experiences in medical surgical and geriatric nursing.

  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.

  • Strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computer technology and other instructional technology to facilitate high quality instruction.

  • Ability and willingness to teach a wide range of classes as schedule and institution commitments require.

  • Strong ability to communicate clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with on-campus groups as well as community representatives, educational and financial partners.

  • Identify course requirements, student learning outcomes (SLO), evaluation (grading) procedures, and attendance requirements in the course syllabus.

  • Continuous development of student learning outcomes and assessment cycles.

  • Participate actively in staff development and professional growth programs, including current research regarding strategies to foster student success. Share relevant information with the department.

  • Maintain professional and ethical academic standards.

  • Carry a fair share of other duties (department and committee work, curriculum development, course revision, community outreach, program planning and review, attending advisory meetings, assessing and improving student learning outcomes).


EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

1. A college selection committee will review all completed and approved applications received. The committee screening will involve an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness as determined from the application package and recommendations from referents.

2. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview following the committee screening.

3. Based upon the committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the president and vice president, who will make the final selection.

SALARY:

Starting salary ranges for entry-level positions is $47,600 to $74,110 for the 10 month academic year. The selected candidate will be allocated within the salary range upon evaluation by the Los Angeles Community Colleges District Human Resources unit. Fringe benefits include medical, vision, dental, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.

Degrees: All degrees must be granted by an accredited college or university in the United States or the transcripts from foreign institutions must be submitted with an approved evaluation of equivalency from a foreign evaluation service approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl635.pdf. Degrees and foreign degree evaluations must be completed at the time of filing an application.

Health: A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment.
