POSITION SUMMARY:
Established in 1899, South University is a private academic institution dedicated to providing educational opportunities for the intellectual, social and professional development of a diverse student population. South University offers personalized student attention and high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs in arts and sciences, business, health professions, nursing, and pharmacy across its six campuses and online.
The Clinical Director for Online Graduate Programs is a member of the full-time faculty (rank commensurate with experience) who also holds an administrative appointment related to managing all aspects of clinical and preceptorship experiences for online students as determined by the Dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health.
Responsibilities include: Designing and coordinating student rotations with clinical and preceptorship experiences and assisting clinical coordinators for programs with the design, implementation, and evaluation of the clinical experiences. This includes providing a perspective for affiliation agreements with health care organizations and systems that meet state regulatory, agency, and university requirements. The Clinical Director contributes to the well-being of all relevant nursing programs and assists with student enrollment growth and faculty involvement.
The Clinical Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the College of Nursing and Public Health and abides by the mandates set by Education Management Corporation, the South University Board of Trustees, University Chancellor, System Vice President for Academic Affairs, and College Deans.
KEY JOB ELEMENTS:
- Perform administrative and instructional duties as outlined in the position description and in accordance with the provisions of Faculty Supplement to the South University Employee Handbook.
- Approve final student rotations as established with the Assistant Clinical Coordinator within clinical and preceptorship settings that span the U.S. and meet on-going needs of the program.
- Development and oversight of continuous review of student rotations within clinical and preceptorship experiences.
- Conduct periodic on-site evaluations of clinical sites and preceptors to insure instructional quality is maintained and clinical objectives are met.
- Ensure that clinical and preceptor experiences meet the requirements of applicable local, state, and national professional and accrediting bodies.
- Prepare accreditation reports pertaining to clinical experiences of students as required.
- Plan and implement methodologies to evaluate program and course curriculum as they relate to clinical and preceptorship experiences.
- Assist with the student admissions process that includes the recruitment, application, screening, and selection of applicants for admission to the graduate nursing programs.
- Oversight and approval of student and institutional files, including information on liability insurance, clinical affiliation agreements, preceptorship agreements, health records, and background checks.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining an effective electronic student documentation system that meets the needs of the nursing curriculum and professional discipline.
- Plan and implement methodologies to evaluate student performance in clinical rotations and preceptorship experiences.
- Conduct periodic on-site observations of students to evaluate instructional quality in their clinical rotations and preceptorship experiences.
- Coordinate day-to-day management and administration of academic operations with the Assistant Dean and Program Directors in the College of Nursing and Public Health and pertinent Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Operations.
- Maintain the highest moral and ethical standards as an educator, nursing professional, and member of the South University community.
- Maintain teaching assignment as determined by the Dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health and pertinent Assistant Vice Chancellor of Online Operations.
- Perform other responsibilities as determined by the Dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health, with collaborative input from the Assistant Dean and Program Directors in the College of Nursing and Public Health and pertinent Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Operations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree (related/DNP & DNSc)
- in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution in an area related to the discipline preferred (minimum of 18 semester hours in the discipline).
- In lieu of terminal degree, MSN candidates with clinical coordination experience will be considered.
- Possess and maintain current professional license and national certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Experience contracting clinical sites and planning preceptorship experiences across a wide geographic domain.
- Documented record of professional, academic, and administrative/management achievement.
- Academic nursing or health-related teaching in a university setting (online teaching experience a plus).
- Ability to read, interpret, and implement accreditation criteria and state agency regulations.
- Ability to resolve inquiries and complaints from students, faculty, preceptors, regulatory agencies, and/or members of the academic or business community.
- Ability to effectively present information to students, faculty, academic leaders, corporate leaders, and public groups.
- Experience with computerized learning management and education administrative systems.
- Proficient with the use of standard business productivity, computer data base management, and Internet applications on personal computers.

- Other requirements specific to the discipline.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: The Assistant Dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health for Online Programs
Supervises: Assistant Clinical Coordinators in the College of Nursing and Public Health.
Interacts With: Inside contact encompasses the entire range of personnel. Outside contact includes clinical site administrators, clinical preceptors, vendor representatives, community and professional leaders, and other nursing educators.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The individual must be able to travel out of the local area with an occasional overnight stay to observe and evaluate students, clinical sites, and clinical coordinators and also participate in a variety of conferences and meetings.
