Vice President for University Advancement – California State University, Los Angeles – Los Angeles, CA

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State L.A.) seeks an energetic, collaborative and experienced fundraising professional to serve as the next vice president for university advancement (vice president) and executive director of the Cal State L.A. Foundation. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and accomplished individual to partner with Cal State L.A.'s new president, William A. Covino, to advance the University during an exciting time of change and transformation. The new vice president's appointment will begin on or before April 1, 2014. The vice president will report to and serve as the president's principal advisor on all advancement matters, will be an active member of the president's leadership team, and will facilitate relationships with and support the work of the Cal State L.A. Foundation board of directors. S/he will engage key partners across Cal State L.A. to foster a holistic, inclusive culture of philanthropy. In preparation for the University's first fundraising campaign, the vice president will conduct a comprehensive assessment of existing philanthropic efforts and work closely with Cal State L.A.'s administrative and academic leadership, staff, and volunteers to identify funding priorities and communicate those priorities throughout the University community. In partnership with key constituents, s/he will design and execute a strategic plan to ensure long-term growth and the attainment of Cal State L.A.'s institutional priorities and ambitious goals.

The vice president will play a central role in enhancing the visibility, institutional image, and public awareness of the University. S/he will articulate and convey a strong and consistent message about the University to its constituencies, and strengthen both internal and external relationships to attract new sources of funding and build lifelong relationships between Cal State L.A. and its alumni, parents, and friends. The vice president will be an active and visible member in the local and university communities.


Responsible for approximately 20 staff, the vice president will set clear and achievable goals, promote and strengthen alumni involvement through creative and relevant programming, and mentor, lead, and inspire staff to meet and exceed expectations. S/he will foster a service-oriented culture and encourage collaboration and cooperation across the University. The vice president will be an inspiring role model for the entire advancement team. S/he will carry a portfolio of high-level prospects and donors and in partnership with the president, provost, deans, senior leadership team, faculty, volunteers, and others, will successfully close significant gifts and steward Cal State L.A.'s top donors.


The ideal candidate must possess strong leadership skills, a keen understanding of best practices in advancement, and a proven record of accomplishment building an efficient, effective, and innovative advancement program in support of an institutional vision. S/he will have a comprehensive knowledge of all major development functions; the ability to plan and execute annual and capital campaigns; demonstrated success developing new and creative approaches to increasing philanthropic support; and personal success in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship at the major and principal gift levels. The candidate must demonstrate a high level of integrity and trust; exhibit the credibility and sophistication to effectively engage and partner with key internal and external stakeholders; and possess the charisma, cultural sensitivity, and communication skills necessary to be an effective representative of Cal State L.A. and a key liaison to its multiple internal and external constituencies. The individual must be a self-starter with a sense of urgency and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a complex environment. The successful candidate must be an open, achievement-oriented professional with a proven ability to cultivate productive, collaborative relationships with faculty and staff across a university. A collegial and accessible leadership style is a prerequisite, as is the energy, resourcefulness, and political savvy needed to introduce and champion new ideas. The individual should have a proven ability to motivate staff and keep them engaged, energized, and focused on results. S/he will create a professional work environment that rewards individual and collective success, builds confidence, and promotes diversity in all its forms. The ideal candidate will possess seven to ten years of experience in leading successful advancement programs, preferably within higher education, and experience working with or in a supporting foundation. Candidates will have a deep appreciation and passion for the mission, goals and culture of Cal State L.A. A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
