4SE is integrated within the General Medical-Surgical Service and Departments of Medicine and Infectious Diseases to provide quality care to adult (aged 15 and higher) medical patients who are acutely ill with a spectrum of diagnoses related to HIV/AIDS, as well as other medical diagnoses such as: pneumonia, r/o tuberculosis, sepsis, sickle cell anemia, cancer and palliative care. Patients are admitted to the unit by their primary care physician or by the Hospitalist/Faculty Service. An interdisciplinary approach to care is provided throughout the continuum of service. Patient care needs are identified through interdisciplinary assessments, team care planning, and a patient classification system.
There is a special focus on pain management, medications, self-care, nutrition, and education. 4SE staff provides special procedures including chemotherapy administration and monitoring, pain management, metabolic support, patient and caregiver education and support, and palliative care. Respiratory isolation services are provided to those patients requiring ‘airborne precautions’. Patients who require a higher level of care are transferred either to a cardiac monitoring unit or to an intensive care unit (ICU). The practice of nursing is in accordance with the California Registered and Licensed Vocational Nurse Practice Acts and Title 22.
All External hires must successfully pass background check, drug screen, and pre-employment physical.

A. Experience:
Clinical Nurse II aka Registered Nurse II: the nurse is competent clinician who provides nursing care in a skilled and effective manner. One year clinical experience a minimum of 1 year acute care experience.
B. Education -- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
C. License, Certification, or Registration Required -- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California. Current BLS for healthcare providers through the American Heart Association.
D. National Specialty Certifications preferred
E. Language Skills – English Language Proficiency required. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, families and the general public in a positive manner.
F. Mathematical Skills – Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
G. Reasoning Ability – Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical/clinical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Follows the nursing plan of care and initiate changes, need critical thinking skills.
H. Special Qualifications – Able to function effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment. Must be capable of making decisions under pressure and managing anger, fear, hostility and violence of others appropriately.
I. Must possess minimum computer competency comprised of a working knowledge of Windows or comparable system specifically including keyboarding and mouse skills and applicable to individual job duties and expectations, employee must demonstrate competency in use of the applications indicated on the competency checklist.
